Kochi, a port city located at the southernmost part of Shikoku Island, the smallest of the four major islands comprising Japan, is known for its fertile agricultural lands and fish farms stretching along the southern coast of Shikoku. During the Meiji Restoration period, Kochi emerged as the center of imperialist ideology and later as an important region where democratic and human rights movements originated. The city attained its current structure with the establishment of the modern municipal system on April 1, 1889. The reason Kochi was targeted by the US XXI Bomber Command during World War II was because it was a prefectural capital and an important industrial and commercial center. In the bombing raid carried out on July 3, 1945, a large part of the city was damaged, many civilians lost their lives, and thousands became homeless.
