Toledo, the capital of Castile-La Mancha, located 70 km southwest of Madrid, is undoubtedly one of Spain’s most important cities with a rich historical heritage. It offers unforgettable memories with its diverse history: from Roman, Visigothic, Islamic periods to the Kingdom of Spain. Surrounded by the Tagus River, built on rugged cliffs, and enclosed by high walls, it has been a valuable city throughout history, from Romans and Visigoths to the Islamic period and the Spanish crown. Formerly the center of Judaism in the Iberian Peninsula until the late 15th century, Toledo hosts Spain’s oldest synagogue, many churches converted from mosques, and the magnificent Cathedral. Its mixture of three monotheistic religions and peoples forms a vibrant mosaic. Until the capital was moved to Madrid in 1561, Toledo was the political, cultural, commercial, and military center. It also inspired Cervantes’ classic Don Quixote, and many stories take place here; therefore, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Highlights include: the panoramic viewpoint offering stunning views of the city's 16th-century appearance, San Martin Bridge, San Juan Monastery, Jewish Quarter, Santo Tome Church, Santa Maria Cathedral Square, shopping street with local crafts, and Zocodover Square, the city’s center. During free time, you can taste the Toledo specialty Mazapan (almond paste) and try Manchego cheese, a famous matured sheep cheese that takes its name from the region.
